Teton County is the Wealthiest County in Wyoming

Rich Californians escaping high taxes and the issues of urban life have found release in the beauty of the Tetons in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Teton County is the wealthiest county in the country where the average income is $312,000 and the median home price is $3.6 million. A food pantry sits across the street from a $6 million townhouse site.

For example, Elizabeth Hutchins moved to Wyoming from Massachusetts in 2018 but for the first seven months she could only afford to live in her van. In fact, in four years she has lived in eight or nine places. Most non-rich residents have to work at least two or three jobs. Most of the workers in Jackson Hole must commute more than 40 miles. There is no middle class in Jackson Hole.

Although the issues of income disparity have been at issue for many communities in the past several years it is particularly difficult. People making between $50-60,000 a year are living in their cars or commuting 40-45 minutes which for many people has become unlivable.

This new land rush came with Covid and those able to relocate to better living situations to do so. The cowboy façade allows many to avoid the class indicators that might make them look wealthy. One wonders whether the owners with the million dollar property.
